Thousands of pupils engage in online learning
Pokey hats all round for all those children in West Dunbartonshire who have engaged in online learning since schools closed their doors in March.
Figures show 95% of pupil have engaged in online learning and more than 75% of pupils have completed work online every week. Figures also show over 40,000 hours of video conferences have taken place to support online learning and staff meetings.
In addition, pupils visited the secure OurCloud Virtual Learning website more than 60,000 times last week to access applications and lessons which support their learning at home.
The new OurCloud.Buzz public access site, where pupils and families can access a range of home learning educational challenges, has already received more than 6,000 hits since its launch earlier this month.
Councillor Karen Conaghan, Convener of Educational Services, said: “It is very encouraging to see the numbers of pupils engaging in online learning and this is testament to our dedicated teaching staff who have provided inspiring work for pupils to complete at home.
“I know how hard both parents and pupils have worked since schools closed in March and these figures represent their commitment to continue learning at home. To support online learning, we have loaned more that 900 Chromebooks to pupils to ensure no-one is disadvantaged by the current restrictions. This support has been welcomed by families and has resulted in our young people being able to access more than 170,000 posts and assignments set by teachers in Google Classrooms.”
She added “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all our teachers and support staff and our parents for their commitment and drive in ensuring pupils across West Dunbartonshire continue to receive their education regardless of their location.”
Councillor Ian Dickson, Vice Convener of Educational Services, said: “These statistics prove how dedicated our pupils and families are to continue with their child’s learning online. We were very well placed to support our pupils at home through our existing online resources which is reflected in the very positive engagement we’ve seen from them. I appreciate the incredible support given to our pupils from teachers along with parents and carers. We will do everything we can to offer assistance to parents to help minimise any pressures they feel to ensure children and young people continue with their education.”
