Health Secretary Yousaf is presiding over complete chaos

‘Staggering’ rise in 12-hour A&E waits under Humza Yousaf exposed

By Bill Heaney

The Scottish Conservatives have today expose the “staggering” rise in the number of patients waiting over half a day to be seen in A&E departments since Humza Yousaf was appointed health secretary.

At the end of his first week as health secretary in May 2021, a total of 113 patients waited more than 12 hours to be seen at A&E.

However, that figure rose to 1,276 in the week ending 4 December 2022, an increase of an incredible 1,029 per cent.

Since Humza Yousaf was appointed health secretary on May 19 2021, a total of 56,228 patients have waited over 12 hours to be seen in Scotland’s emergency departments.

In the equivalent 81 weeks before he took up post in charge of Scotland’s NHS, a total of 7,628 patients spent this time in A&E before being treated.

Tory Sandesh Gulhane and SNP’s Humza Yousaf

That means the under-fire health secretary has overseen a 637 per cent rise in the total number of patients spending this “barely believable” time in emergency departments.

Shadow health secretary Dr Sandesh Gulhane says this is yet “further damning evidence” of Humza Yousaf’s “catastrophic mismanagement” of Scotland’s NHS, and why he must be sacked.

He says patients have completely lost faith in the health secretary’s abilities and warns Humza Yousaf is continuing to put “more and more lives needlessly on the line” with his lack of leadership.

Scottish Conservative shadow health secretary Dr Sandesh Gulhane MSP, said: “Everyone knows Humza Yousaf is presiding over complete chaos in our A&E departments, but this exposes just how catastrophic his tenure has been.

“He has long given up on hitting the four-hour waiting time target, but now we see the staggering rise in patients waiting half a day or more on his watch.

“The SNP were already mismanaging our services before Humza Yousaf became the party’s latest health secretary.

“However, his lack of leadership and flimsy recovery plans have meant tens of thousands more patients having to languish for a barely believable time in A&E before being seen.

“Humza Yousaf is literally putting more and more lives needlessly on the line. It is utterly disgraceful that almost 1,300 patients waited 12 hours or more in the week ending December 4, compared to just over 100 in his first week as health secretary.

“This is further damning evidence of why he must be sacked. He has lost the trust of suffering patients and dedicated staff alike.

“If this horrific evidence doesn’t make Nicola Sturgeon sack Humza Yousaf, then I don’t know what will. He must go immediately.”

  1. Forget about Yousaf. He’s a bit player playing politician.

Big picture is funding. And the big question is where is the big red Brexit bus that was going to be bringing £350 million ever week. Hasn’t quite appeared. In fact it’s totally disappeared.

Just like the UK economy that’s disappearing taking with it pay, pensions and living standards. But worry not, that’s what folks voted for. And so, at this time of year, stay warm, turn up the heating and dance.
