It was a day to wear black at the Rock yesterday. Sons had that funereal look about them as they went down 5-1 to Albion Rovers on Saturday.
DUMBARTON endured a nightmare afternoon at home when they were outplayed and well beaten by Albion Rovers who won 5-1 in a first half goal blitz.
The game got off to a disastrous start after seven minutes when Joe Bevan ran through to open the scoring for the visitors.
Four minutes later the same player punished more slack defending, turning to finish in the box.
After 19 minutes, only a brilliant save by Brett Long denied Scott Roberts a third.
But a third goal did come for the visitors on 32 minutes, Charlie Reilly finishing brilliantly from the edge of the area.
Bevan was then only prevented from securing his hat-trick by another fine save from Long, but from the resulting corner, Callum Wilson bent home a shot to make it 4-0.
Dumbarton did get forward more often in the second half, but had to wait until the late stages to see much of note in front of goal.
Ross MacLean had a late shot deflected across goal and wide, and from the resulting corner, Ally Love hit the post.
However, an Albion Rovers defender deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper with two minutes left for a consolation.
The visitors, though, simply went upfield and scored a fifth, Reilly sweeping into an empty net after another rampage through the home defence, who badly missed the ill Gregor Buchanan.
After a big effort to allow the match to be played, this was an enormously deflating afternoon.
Despite it all, Sons retain top spot in cinch League Two after Stirling Albion drew 1-1 at Stranraer.
