Planning to bring your Personal Watercraft (PWC) or motorised boat to Loch Lomond?
While we want everyone to have a great time, we are reminding all users that the Loch Lomond Byelaws are strictly enforced to ensure all loch users are safe and responsible, stop anti-social behaviour (ASB) and protect vulnerable water users like swimmers and paddleboarders.
Our National Park Rangers are on the water daily and frequently have Police Scotland alongside targeting irresponsible behaviour and ASB.
Know the rules before you launch to avoid heavy fines or prosecution:
Mandatory Registration: All power-driven vessels—including every jet ski—must be registered. Under the Loch Lomond User Registration Scheme, individuals must register their personal details before taking charge of a motorised craft.
Strict 6kph (4mph) Slow-Speed Zones: Yellow buoys mark out 6kph slow-speed zones at high-risk, mixed-use areas. These zones include Balloch Castle Country Park, Duck Bay, Manse Bay, Milarrochy Bay, Luss, Sallochy, and Rowardennan. Within these areas, you must stay under 6kph and create no wake (a slow walking pace).
Island Speed Restrictions: An 11kph (7mph) speed limit applies around the southern islands, including Inchtavannach, Inchmoan, and Inchcruin.
Zero Tolerance for ASB: Reckless driving, weaving too close to non-motorised craft, or creating dangerous wakes near swimmers will not be tolerated. Registered owners are legally held responsible if under-16s breach byelaws using their vessels. Abusive behaviour towards the ranger teams or other loch users will be reported directly to the police.
Let’s keep the loch safe for families, swimmers, and responsible boaters alike. Enjoy the water, watch your speed, and respect those around you.
