Nick Fish, 23, was reported missing at around 7pm on Sunday after attending an event at Box Hub, on Washington Street in Glasgow.
His body was found at around 8pm on Monday and his family was made aware.
Mr Fish, originally from Helensburgh, was studying for his diploma in law at the University of Glasgow.
His mum Gill told STV News she had lost her “wonderful, funny, and incredibly loved” son in a “tragic, freak accident”.
“Nick was just wonderful. He was so fun, and so funny”, she said.
“Nick was so incredibly loved by all; young and old, relatives and friends; colleagues and teachers. His sisters adored him.
“He was such a popular and friendly face at the petrol garage at Helensburgh in Tesco. He was an absolute star behind the till. He spent an amazing 11 years at Hermitage Primary and Academy, and was loved there.
“He really was just amazing. In his company, he left you feeling totally relaxed.
“The devastating pain and impact of his death is unfathomable. His memory will live on in all the lives he touched.”

Nick Fish was last seen around 7pm on Sunday after attending an event at Box Hub on Washington Street in Glasgow.
A spokesperson for the University of Glasgow said: “Everyone at the University, and particularly all at the Law School, is deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Nick’s untimely death.
Claire Chisholm, principal of Lomond School said: “We are deeply saddened to learn about the tragic death of former pupil, Nick Fish.
“Nick was a bright, popular and charismatic young man who we were immensely proud of. All of our thoughts are with his family and friends during this very difficult time.”
Nick’s funeral will be held on Monday, April 8, at Clydebank Crematorium.
