20mph speed limit areas to be extended as councils share £14m for road safety
Scotland’s 32 councils, including West Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute, will share £14 million from the Scottish Government to improve road safety.
The money includes £4m which will go towards rolling out 20mph limits on more roads, but there is nothing forthcoming for potholes and broken traffic lights.
The Government has also released an implementation guide to introducing the new speed limit, which emphasises having “comprehensive” consultations with affected residents.
Government consultations at every level are not welcomed by the public and receive a poor response.
Earlier this month, Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop warned that road deaths this year are tracking at 26% above the same period in 2023.
Ms Hyslop said: “Road safety is a top priority for the Scottish Government, which is why we are making a record investment of £36m this financial year toward initiatives that reduce road casualties.
“This £14m investment underlines our commitment to supporting our road safety partners implement schemes that protect the public.
“The release of our 20mph implementation guide will help local authorities introduce lower speed limits consistently across Scotland, creating safer streets for everyone.
“Our goal of making Scotland’s roads the safest in the world by 2030 is unwavering.”
