Labour councillor and former Lord Provost is arrested in connection with stalking offences

Philip Braat has been an elected member since 2007 and currently represents the Anderston, City, Yorkhill ward. A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously. They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.”

The 48-year-old was arrested on Wednesday, October 23, Police Scotland said. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Braat has worked part-time as a parliamentary caseworker for the new Glasgow North East Labour MP, Maureen Burke. He is a member of the Law Society of Scotland. He became deputy Lord Provost of Glasgow in 2017 before being named Lord Provost in 2020.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 48-year-old man was arrested and charged on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in connection with stalking offences. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and he is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.”

According to reports, it is understood he has been suspended by Labour pending the outcome of the investigation.
