Reader Becky Chadwick says: “This is not a mainstream movie and I’m not surprised many didn’t like it. I loved the book and thought the movie was a masterpiece! I’ve seen it described as a story of the Magdalene Laundries. It plays a part in the movie however it is rather a movie of one man’s moral dilemma which Murphy plays beautifully.
“His expressions, his behaviour and speech are each a part of what’s happening internally. The symbolism throughout the movie superb and acting amazing. It’s not for everyone but I hope it is recognized by Oscar and BAFTA for the beautiful film it is.”
Natalie Thompson adds: “Great film however I think the film assumes that people know more about what went on these days. Abortion was illegal in Ireland so a teenage pregnancy brought shame on families. They were sent to the nuns where they were made to work and abused. Their children were taken away from them… Often sold. Many babies went into bad homes or care. Those babies now grown have been trying to find their mothers. The young women were treated terribly. Unfortunately this will happen again if Trump gets his way in America.”
