Update – Helensburgh Leisure Centre

Helensburgh

Message from Argyll and Bute Council

We continue to work as quickly as possible to carry out repairs to Helensburgh Leisure Centre following the damage done by red weather event Storm Eowyn, and this remains a priority.

We are working closely with our loss adjusters, insurers and disaster recovery specialists to protect and fix the damage caused.  Whilst not apparent from external viewpoints, work has been done internally to protect the building as reasonably practicable, and a waterproof membrane has been attached to the roof.

A site meeting took place last week with contractors and we were able to realign the fencing cordoning off the site to enable public access to a section of the pier. We aim to get the leisure centre open again as soon as is feasibly possible, but this will take several months.

We cannot yet give a definite timescale at this stage because various key steps and survey work are ongoing, and repair details are being finalised with contractors and insurer.  We will provide updates once the programme to complete the repair is confirmed.

  1. But why did the building so disastrously fall apart. Its a new building should have been designed and built to take the wind.

And of course exactly a year before the new leisure center had to be closed because of roof damage by wind.

Something is not right. New building should not fall apart like this. So who is going to pay for what most certainly appears to be a shoddy design and build. The Council’s insurers or the builder – designer. Is there a subrogation claim by the Council’s insurers against the builder designer and or are the council pursuing the builder designer.

Its a good question that no one is talking about. Good money. taxpayers money was spent on this new building building that can’t withstand a winter.

So Argyll and Bute council, instead of happy claptrap about working hard to get the building repaired how about telling folks who is paying for the repair and loss arising out of this expensive weather susceptible building falling apart.

Or is the council taxpayer, just going to pick up the tab?
