ALL CHANGE IN BOARDROOM AS SONS SET OFF ON NEW SEASON

By Bill Heaney

All change at Dumbarton FC where Dr Neil Mackay has taken the decision to step down from his role as chairman, which he had held since 2021.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Neil, pictured left, for his tireless work for the club over the years; having served as club doctor, director and then chairman – helping to guide us through one of the most challenging spells in our history,” a Sons spokesperson said.

Neil also played a pivotal role in setting up the Dumbarton Women’s side who are continuing to go from strength-to-strength, and supported the launch of a number of community-centred initiatives.

Chairman John Steele and club owner Mario Lapointe.

Dr Mackay will be replaced in the role of chairman by a familiar face in John Steele, a Helensburgh solicitor.

John previously held the role between 2018 and 2021, but has now returned to the position to support the rebuilding of the club under the new ownership of Mario Lapointe.

He explained: “I’m delighted to return to the role of chairman at such an exciting stage in the club’s history.

“When Mario initially asked me about taking on the position again, I turned it down. But he sold me on his vision for the future of Dumbarton Football Club – and I found myself unable to turn down the opportunity.

“On and off the park it’s a fresh start and a new era for us all as Sons fans, and I’m delighted to be a part of that.

“We wish John all the best in his new role, and look forward to seeing Dr Mackay back at the Marbill Coaches Stadium as a fan very soon.”
