Staff from Denbridge Medical Practice took part in the Great Scottish Run 10K this month, promoting the benefits of physical activity for mental and physical wellbeing while strengthening team spirit.Although some had previously completed the half-marathon, this year the focus was on inclusivity. “A 10K felt less daunting for those who haven’t run much,” said Dr Guy Pilsworth, GP Partner.
“We also have team members who are pregnant, so it was important to choose a distance that felt achievable.”
Practice Manager Nicola suggested entering as a corporate team, and 15 staff, trainees, and HSCP colleagues signed up – representing half of the practice’s workforce, which cares for 10,000 patients.
“We weren’t sure if anyone would want to join us,” added Dr Elise Al-Asadi, a GP at the Glasgow practice, “but we were delighted by the response.”
For many, it was their first time running such a distance. “It’s more about the team experience,” said Dr Pilsworth, “but we also wanted to run well, since corporate entries are ranked by the combined times of the four fastest runners.”
The team included a wide range of abilities, ages, and fitness levels – including pregnant and post-pregnancy runners. “Running is usually seen as a solitary activity, but doing it together was a great bonding experience,” said Dr Al-Asadi. Receptionist Amanda even designed custom “Team Denbridge” T-shirts for the race.
The team hopes their participation encourages patients to be more active.
“Many people with chronic conditions feel events like this aren’t for them,” said Dr Pilsworth. “We hope we’ve shown that just taking part is what matters.”
Greeting each other at the finish line on Glasgow Green was a highlight. “We all started together near the back to support our slower runners – that felt like a real team effort,” he added.
“It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day,” said Dr Al-Asadi, “but this helped us decompress and connect as individuals, not just colleagues. It’s given us a lot to chat about!”
With several new staff members recently joining, the event also helped build connections outside the surgery. “Running is such a great leveller,” said Dr Pilsworth.
“Glasgow looked spectacular,” said Dr Al-Asadi. “The atmosphere was electrifying – it made us proud to live and work in such a great city.”

Practice makes perfect, well not quite, whose team came 13th in the Great Scottish Run.
The team placed 13th in the corporate rankings, and plans are already underway for next year. “We’ve all agreed it’ll be a calendar event,” said Dr Al-Asadi. “And after surprising ourselves this year, we’re aiming for a top ten finish next time!”
To keep the momentum going, the practice is launching a page to share team stories, running tips, and encouragement for patients who want to get more active – no matter their starting point.
