ROYAL NORTHERN AND CLYDE YACHT CLUB FOR SALE

Stewart Cunningham

I have always maintained that nothing is forever but it was sad for me today when I saw that this part of my past life was going under the hammer.
I had my first pint of beer in the Royal Northern & Clyde Yacht Club here in Rhu 53 years ago and many a shenanigan in the place thereafter. I’m even old enough to remember it before the bar extension on the left. It was built in 1857 as a private house and changed to the yacht club in 1937. It sits on just under 6 acres and has various outbuildings and lodge house.  I have no doubt it’ll become an exclusive des res address.
Stewart’s fellow photographer, John Young, added: “Spent many an evening there photographing trophy  presentations during my brief time at the Helensburgh Advertiser. I remember Harry Turner used to wear a RNCYC tie (which I admired) all the time on jobs and I believe he presented me one of my own, even though I was not a member.”
