The Scottish Conservatives today (Friday 18 September) marked the anniversary of the 2014 independence referendum by launching a new campaign against John Swinney’s latest push to break up the UK.
In response to the “separatist summit” of the SNP, Sinn Féin and Plaid Cymru in Cardiff, the party is urging people to reject another divisive referendum.
Leader Russell Findlay says the SNP have never respected the decisive result of the 2014 referendum.
He says that Scots want the SNP government to focus on key issues such as rising bills, economic growth and fixing Scotland’s broken public services.
Findlay challenged Swinney at First Minister’s Questions on sharing a platform with Sinn Féin, who still justify the IRA’s mass murder of innocent people, including Scottish soldiers.
He also asked if Swinney would put pressure on his Sinn Féin allies to denounce IRA terrorism.
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay, left, said: “Twelve years ago the people of Scotland made their voices heard in the largest act of democracy in our country’s history.
“More than two million Scots rejected the SNP’s bid to break up Britain, but from day one, the nationalists did not respect the decisive result.
“Ever since, Scotland has suffered as the SNP has always put its divisive agenda over effective governance.
“John Swinney’s attendance at the separatist summit in Cardiff confirms that the threat to our country has not diminished.
“With Swinney now forming a morally repugnant pact with Sinn Féin, it’s time for the people of Scotland to make their voices heard again.
“I would urge all those proud Scots who value our place at the heart of a strong United Kingdom to back our campaign.
“They can tell Swinney to focus on fixing public services and bringing down bills rather than obsessing over independence.
“In today’s increasingly dangerous and volatile world, the last thing Scotland needs is more division, distraction, and uncertainty.
“The Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party will always stand up for Scotland’s place in the Union, and our campaign will send a strong message to the SNP.”
