GARVAGHY ROAD: It seems the dead are easily forgotten

by Neil Mackay in the Herald
“It seems the dead are easily forgotten. Men like Michael McGoldrick, Robert Hamill and Frank O’Reilly. Women like Rosemary Nelson. Children like Jason, Mark and Richard Quinn.
“They all died because Orangemen wanted to walk – in an act of triumphalist, sectarian supremacy – from Drumcree Church down the Catholic Garvaghy Road in Portadown. If the dead were truly remembered and honoured – if anybody in power cared about Michael McGoldrick, Robert Hamill, Frank O’Reilly, Rosemary Nelson and the Quinn children – there wouldn’t have been the scenes we saw this weekend. There would have been no attempt at another supremacist march through a neighbourhood which wants to be left alone.
“Nearly 30 years have passed since this dreadful, stupid and pointless march was last allowed to happen. Now we’re back to where we thought we’d never be again.”
