Natural Year

A Natural Year book coverThe Tranquil Rhythms and  Restorative Powers of Irish Nature Through the Seasons by Michael Fewer

‘The ability to notice things and the curiosity to ask questions are the marks of a scientist, no matter what age they are or live in. But being able to communicate so well that the viewer, listener or reader immediately wants to go and experience what is being described, this is a much rarer talent. Michael Fewer has always been curious, always been aware of his surroundings … In this book he allows the reader to share what has made the day special for him as he looks out the window or walks through the local fields. It is a real celebration of nature’. Éanna Ní Lamhna, broadcaster and writer

A Natural Year is a diary of discovery, a gentle and accessible wander through the living environment on our doorsteps.  Acclaimed writer and columnist Michael Fewer has kept a record of the passing months and seasons in an Irish natural year – and his observations reveal and reinforce the magic of the ordinary, its restorative benefit to our well-being and perspective in an increasingly manic world. Beautifully illustrated with the author’s line drawings and colour photographs, A Natural Year is available in paperback from bookshops, online and from (€17.95/£15.99).

About the book: In A Natural Year, critically  acclaimed travel writer Michael Fewer celebrates the everyday wonder of Irish nature in these beautifully written diaries, observed from his homes in south Dublin and rural Waterford, in which he delights at the startling beauty and extraordinary complexity of the natural world through the tranquil rhythms of the passing seasons.

Fewer’s infectious passion for his subject simply inspires our own observation, and suggests how careful study of the natural world around us can be a sure antidote to the stresses of modern life.

At a time when it’s essential for us to understand the crisis that faces our wildlife and environment, we need to know more about the natural world around us, the treasures that are being needlessly lost, and the threat to our very way of life.  A Natural Year will open eyes and hearts to a greater understanding of the world around us, and its innate beauty and fragility
