A children’s house on Garelochside has received an outstanding report from the Care Inspectorate.

Blairvadach, which is run by West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership,  was graded excellent for the standard of care and support it offers to residents under the age of 18.

Inspectors praised staff and said young people are being very well looked after.  Staff were also recognised for working incredibly hard to ensure the lives of the young residents are moving forward.  Inspectors found The Champion’s Board, which gives young people in care a voice and a say in key decisions that affect their lives, was a major strength in the house and of WDHSCP.

The inspection team  were also impressed with the care planning saying it was clear that young people were at the heart of decisions and were able to proudly speak of their care plans and achievements.

Inspectors graded both the leadership and the staff as “very good” and praised them for fully meeting the needs of the young people and for being passionate about improving the home for the benefit of residents.

The inspection team received feedback from a number of young people during their visit, with comments including:  ‘My key worker is the best. If she says she is going to do something, she does it that day.

‘I feel safe in here and I know I can trust the staff.  It’s a nice environment for me and I see this as my house until I am 18.’ ‘Staff are always around. They will come and sit with me if I feel unsafe’

Councillor Marie McNair, Chair of WDHSCP Audit Committee, said: “This is an excellent inspection report for the management and staff at Blairvadach. It is very clear the young people are receiving outstanding care and support. This report is testament to the hard work and commitment of our dedicated and committed staff who care passionately about our children and young people. I would like to congratulate everyone at Blairvadach for this contribution to this positive inspection.”

Allan Macleod, Vice Chair of WDHSCP Audit Committee, said: “This report recognises the dedication of staff who work together to ensure the young people are heard and are receiving an outstanding quality of care.  I am pleased to see the young people being nurtured, and encouraged to lead active and fulfilling lives with the support and guidance of our staff. I would like to thank everyone at Blairvadach for their part in achieving this great report.”
