At Women in Journalism Scotland we know of hundreds of talented women journalists right across Scotland who should be recognised for the high quality of work they produce, but who don’t put themselves forward for these types of awards. The period following Christmas and New Year can be a financial struggle for many. We want to help to remove barriers for women who might be put off nominating themselves because of the entrance fee, and are offering to cover the cost of ten women entries into any categories other than the Nicola Barry award.
Earlier this year Whirlpool were forced to recall faulty tumble dryers and just this month they have started to recall faulty washing machines. In many cases the machines had caused significant household fires. Consumers have had difficulty getting information from the Whirlpool website to arrange to have their machines removed and many people remain unaware of the problem.
The Society of Editors has called on Downing Street to ensure that access to open government is maintained for journalists working at Westminster. The Society’s actions follow concerns from lobby correspondents working at Westminster who hear that changes to the traditional lobby system will harm coverage of government actions and intentions.
Three teachers who were assaulted by pupils were awarded more than £100,000 compensation between them, according to Scotland’s largest teachers union. The EIS says one of the victims received £55,000 after suffering serious injuries. The figures were contained in the union’s annual roundup of compensation secured for its members.
